4 named to all-MWC softball team
Carroll shocked many teams during the 2008 softball season but it was no surprise when the Lady Pioneers were well represented on the Midwest Conference all-league team.
Carroll was picked to finish fifth in the five-team MWC north division in a preseason poll of league coaches. But the young Lady Pioneers were just two runs short of qualifying for the league's post-season tournament.
Carroll finished the season 14-10 overall, 5-3 in the north division. The Lady Pioneers toppled Ripon College 8-0 in game one of a season-ending doubleheader then fell by a 2-1 margin in the nightcap. A victory in game two would have put Carroll into the league's tournament, eventually won by Ripon.
Amanda Schrimsher and Jackie Messler garnered first team all-league recognition while Kelsey Deakins and Nicole Rieth were second team selections. Schrimsher, Messler and Rieth finished one-two-three on the team in batting average while Deakins led the pitching staff.
Schrimsher led Carroll in almost every offensive category, including batting average (.476), runs scored (20), hits (39), doubles (6) and runs batted in (23).
Messler batted .431 for the season on 28 hits in 65 at-bats. She scored 12 runs, drove in nine others, and was perfect on the bases with a team-high 10 stolen bases in 10 attempts.
Deakins finished 8-5 on the season with a 2.21 earned run average. She pitched 85.1 innings, giving up just 83 hits and 27 earned runs. She struck out 54 batters while walking 37.
Rieth boasted a .950 fielding percentage, recording 17 putouts and just one error. She batted .366 on the season in 41 plate appearances.
