Carroll College Pioneer Cheerleaders

Being a member of the Carroll College Pioneer Cheerleaders requires a significant commitment, but brings with it end less rewards. Cheerleaders provide enhancement and entertainment during football and men’s and women’s basketball home games when school is in session. Carroll College Pioneer Cheerleaders support the Pioneer athletes, students, parents, and fans in showing school spirit. We take pride in our strength, abilities, and accomplishments the squad has made each year.

Tryouts
Try-outs are held usually twice a year, before football and basketball seasons. Football season try-outs occur usually the first week of classes. Basketball season try-outs are held as soon as football season is complete.

Try-outs consist of two days of practice and the third day try-outs are done in front of a panel of judges. The try-out participants learn and perform a cheer, short dance, and a variety of three jumps. The cheer and short dance are taught by the captains during practice. There is also a time to show any gymnastic ability. The squad consists of up to 18 members, and can be co-ed.

Practices
Practices are fun and a learning environment. Each practice we go through material and learn new material. Each cheerleader is encouraged to give impute for new material they want to try as a squad (cheers, dances, stunts, etc.). Cheerleaders are required to attend all practices. Full participation is essential and expected for the squad’s success.

Practices are held Monday through Thursday from 4 – 6 p.m. in Van Male Gymnasium. Also an hour workshop type practice is held for creating new material once a week. Additional practices are held as needed. Extra practices are flexible and work around the squad’s schedules.

Attendance policy
The attendance policy is as follows. If a member of the cheerleading squad misses more than one game for reasons other than illness, that member will be removed from the team. Members of the cheerleading squad will be allowed to miss practices during the season for illness, academic, etc. If a member misses seven practices than that member will be removed from the squad. Attendance at every practice is expected; practices immediately before games should never be missed. If a squad member must miss practice, she/he should inform the captains and make arrangements to meet with another squad member before the next practice to learn anything that might be new. Special circumstances will bedealt with on a case to case basis.

Competition
The Carroll College Pioneer Cheerleaders are able to participate in one competition usually during the spring semester. This competition is within commutable distance and will not require an overnight stay.

Uniforms
Uniforms are checked out at the beginning of each season and checked in at the end. Each girl will have a shell, skirt, and pants. Each member is required to purchase cheerleading shoes and briefs. Also during football season members are required to also purchase a jacket and then gloves and headbands for cold weather. Optional costs are whatever the squad chooses to commemorate the season with (i.e. long or short sleeve shirts)

Captains
The captains are chosen at the end of the year for the next school year. The captains are voted on by the whole squad. The captains are like the coaches during practices and games. Captains are in charge of making sure everything runs smoothly, listen to other squad members, and meet with the advisor and Carroll College staff to ensure the success of the entire squad.
